The Institution of Munich has the position of Germany's sixth-oldest university that has been open during its entire history. The university was first established in Ingolstadt in 1472 by Duke Ludwig IX of Bavaria-Landshut. In 1800, King Maximilian I of Bavaria relocated the university to Landshut because Ingolstadt was under attack by the French. In 1826, King Ludwig I of Bavaria moved the university to its current location in Munich. King Maximilian I of Bavaria bestowed the honorary title of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat to the institution in the year 1802, naming it in recognition of both himself and the original founder of the university.

There have been a total of 43 Nobel Prize winners connected to the University of Munich (as of October 2020). Among them were Wilhelm Rontgen, Max Planck, Werner Heisenberg, Otto Hahn and Thomas Mann. In addition to that, Pope Benedict XVI was both a student and a lecturer at the school.
