Instagram is an American photo and video sharing social networking service founded in 2010 by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. The platform allows users to upload media that can be edited with filters, organized by hashtags, and tagged with locations. Posts can be shared publicly or with pre-approved followers.

Initially released for iOS in October 2010, Instagram quickly gained popularity, reaching one million registered users within two months. The Android version was released in April 2012, followed by web and other platform versions.

In April 2012, Facebook Inc. (now Meta Platforms) acquired Instagram for approximately US$1 billion in cash and stock. Since the acquisition, Instagram has introduced new features such as Stories, IGTV, Reels, and Shopping, becoming one of the most influential social media platforms globally.
